Used Drum Sets are the best way to go for any drummer,for beginners you can save a ton of cash and for experienced drummers you can find those drums that have been broken in so to speak and many have that distinct sound that you looking for that can only be found in a second hand drum. Levon Helm of the band makes use of a old drum found in a pawn shop because it has a sound he likes that can't be mimicked on any other drum.

Most of the drum manufactures make excellent equipment and claim to rival each other but the popular ones like Ludwig seem to be the most popular,possibly because there are so big in numbers that you see them everywhere but thequality is excellent so don't fear if your getting a used set of ludwig drums.    A personal favorite is pearl drums because they make everything imaginable also the sound is so damn reliable , tune them and forget the worry of keeping having to retune all the time.

Yamaha drums have an excellent reputation as all of their musical instruments have,most people think about a motorcycle when the name yamaha come up but yamaha started out in the music business before the motorcycle business,on the bikes you will see the tuning forks on their badge which is a symbol of their beginnings. It seems strange that yamaha   started  out in the music business to go onto other ventures but that is the way the Japanese are showing diversification and branching out into other areas of products which are of great quality.

Slingerland drums are great but the company has a unstable past,they are now owned by Gibson which is famous for guitars but rest assured they also make excellent drums and are a great company.  Another of the good drum mfgs worth mentioning are Gretsch ,Tama,ddrum,DW drum, and Rodgers drums, any of these are good choices.
